INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Notre Dame junior JoAnna Deeter and sophomore Marshaun turned in a pair of seventh-place finishes on the first day of the NCAA track and field championships at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. Deeter placed third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:10.16. Texas Tech’s Leigh Daniel won with a time of 16:01.11. West’s jump of 24-10 also earned him a seventh-place finish. George Mason’s Maurice Wignall won with a jump of 26-1 1/2. Both finishes earn Notre Dame three team points, placing the men in 22nd place and the women in 31st.

Irish freshman Liz Grow ran in the 400 meters and finished fifth in her heat with a time of 56.85. Senior Antonio Arce took sixth his heat in the mile run with a time of 4:04.14. Notre Dame junior Jennifer Engelhart and senior Mike Brown will compete on Saturday. Engelhart will compete in the high jump for the second time in her career after placing ninth as a freshman in 1997. Brown will make his first NCAA appearance by competing in the pole vault.
