Meet The Volleyball Freshmen: Sam Fry

Aug. 22, 2014

The University of Notre Dame volleyball team welcomed six freshmen to the program last week as preseason practice got underway. The group comes to ND from California, Indiana, Kansas and Ohio and covers pretty much every position on the court. In a new Q&A series, it’s time for Irish fans to meet the group and learn a little more about them leading up to Notre Dame’s first match at No. 12 Minnesota August 29. Stay tuned over the next four days as Natalie Johnson, Jo Kremer, Sydney Kuhn and Maddie Plumlee answer a variety of hard-hitting questions. For yesterday’s segment with Maddie Dilfer, click here.
Next up: Middle Blocker Sam Fry.
Hometown: Cincinnati, OH
High School: Ursuline Academy
Potential Major: Business
The best thing about my hometown: Friends and family
Favorite place on campus so far: St. Mary’s Lake
What drew me to ND: The balance between great academics and athletics … a competitive classroom environment … all of the opportunities Notre Dame has to offer … the tradition.
A hobby that most people wouldn’t know about: Cooking / baking
Favorite app on phone: Instagram
Sport I’d play if it wasn’t volleyball: Basketball
Game-day superstition: I usually wear the same headband (if I wear one)
What makes volleyball so special to me: Working with people just like me that are trying to achieve one goal
Favorite food: Greek yogurt and granola
Favorite TV Show: None
Secret (or not so secret) talent: I can play the piano
How my teammates would describe me: Very competitive and fiery
Personal possession I couldn’t live without: My phone
The people I look up to the most and why: My mom (Shari Matvey Fry). She is very successful, humble and a self-made woman. She was also very successful when she played basketball at Notre Dame (first Notre Dame women’s player to score more than 1,000 points in career).
Advice that has stuck with me: “Leave the court a better player, leave Notre Dame a better person.”
