Mayer Named Mackey Award Semifinalist

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — University of Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer was named one of the semifinalists for the John Mackey Award on Monday. The award honors the best tight end in all of college football.

Mayer has been the most consistent option for the Irish on offense this season as he leads the team in receptions (41) and receiving yards (465). He ranks fourth amongst tight ends in receptions and is fifth in receiving yards per game (66.9). He has had five receptions or more in five of the seven games he has played this season, and 24 of his 41 receptions this season have resulted in a first down.

He opened the season with a career-best nine receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown in the Irish’s overtime win at Florida State, tying the Notre Dame record for most receptions in a single game by a tight end. The very next week, he hauled in a career-high two receiving touchdowns in the win over Toledo and was named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week.

Three finalists for the Mackey Award will be named on November 23. The winner will be announced at the Mackey Award Presentation Banquet on February 2, 2022. Mayer looks to be the second Irish player to win the award after Tyler Eifert won it after the 2012 season.
