NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame defenseman Matt Miller (Warrenton, Va./Notre Dame Academy) has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award in the men’s lacrosse division.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 20 candidates announced in February. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website or on the Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through May 13. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Lacrosse Championships in Philadelphia May 25-27.

Miller has started every contest over the past two seasons on Notre Dame’s stellar defensive unit. Last season, he earned honorable mention All-America honors in addition to being named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team as he helped the Irish boast the nation’s top defense by allowing just 6.31 goals per game. The Rochester Rattlers selected Miller in the sixth round (44th overall) of January’s Major League Lacrosse Draft.

Miller, a Fighting Irish team captain, boasts a 3.158 cumulative GPA as a finance major in Notre Dame’s nationally-ranked Mendoza College of Business and he is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star. He and the rest of his teammates are heavily involved in service projects in the Notre Dame/South Bend community. Miller also takes part in community service work back home in Virginia.

Miller is the fourth student-athlete in program history to be selected as a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. Ryan Hoff (2009), Scott Rodgers (2010) and Kevin Randall (2012) are the other Notre Dame men’s lacrosse players that have been finalists for the prestigious honor.

Notre Dame is 7-2 this season with six of those victories coming against ranked opponents, including five top-10 foes. Miller and the Irish defense have held four teams to seven goals or fewer this season. Notre Dame limited No. 4 Duke to five goals in a 13-5 victory and the Irish surrendered just four tallies to No. 8 Ohio State in a 9-4 besting of the Buckeyes.

The fourth-ranked Fighting Irish return to action Sunday at Providence. Faceoff is slated for 1 p.m. (ET) at Lennon Family Field.
