Mary Carpenter Joins List Of Irish Women's Lacrosse Recruits

April 22, 2004

Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame women’s lacrosse coach Tracy Coyne has announced the addition of one more player to her 2004-05 recruiting class.

Mary Carpenter (Rochester, N.Y.) becomes the sixth athlete to sign a national letter-of-intent to attend Notre Dame in the fall of 2004, joining Heather and Lindsey Ferguson (Newtown Square, Pa.), Julie Foote (Suffern, N.Y.), Caitlin McKinney (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and Becky Ranck (Radnor, Pa.), all who signed in the early-signing period in November.

In making the announcement, Coyne said, “I’m very excited to have Mary joining this class of recruits. She’s a solid addition with proven goal-scoring ability. Mary caught our eye at camp last summer by demonstrating the athletic ability and work ethic to compete at this level. Her sister Lisa is a student at Notre Dame, so Mary has a good idea of what it means to be a part of the Notre Dame family.”

Carpenter will join the Irish as a midfielder after a standout career at Our Lady of Mercy High School in Rochester. At Mercy, Carpenter has been a three-sport standout, excelling in lacrosse, soccer and basketball. As of April 15th, she ranked second on New York State’s all-time goal scoring list with 328 career goals and is the Section V record holder for goals. She also holds school records for season and career goals, ground balls and points.

In soccer, Carpenter ranks third on the school’s all-time goal scoring list and was a two-time All Greater Rochester soccer selection. In basketball, she averaged 13 points per game with seven rebounds and five steals. She was selected the Rochester Press-Radio Club’s 2003 Female High School Athlete of the Year and is a finalist for Rochester’s Sportswoman of the Year for 2004.

The Irish are currently 10-2 on the season and ranked sixth in the nation. They return to action on Friday, April 23 when they host Johns Hopkins in a 7:00 p.m. game at Moose Krause Stadium.
