Marie Labosky and Heather Mattingly Compete At NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships

Long Island, N.Y. – Notre Dame freshman Marie Labosky and junior Heather Mattingly competed Thursday at the 2001 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Long Island, N.Y., but failed to qualify for tonight’s finals. Labosky finished 20th in the morning preliminaries of the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:02.69. Stanford’s Shelly Ripple was the top qualifier in the event at 1:56.56.

In one-meter diving, Mattingly finished 24th with 245.75 points after the morning session. Houston’s Yulia Pakhalina, a freshman, was first with 318.95 points.

The 2001 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships continue Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Irish junior Kelly Hecking takes to the water competing in the 100 backstroke, while Mattingly tries again in the three-meter diving competition. Labosky will also try to improve her standing when she swims her strongest event, the 400 individual medley.
