Luke Zeller Set To Compete For Athletes In Action At 2006 William Jones Cup

Notre Dame, Ind. – Sophomore center/forward Luke Zeller (Washington, Ind.) will compete for Athletes In Action at the 28th Jones Cup that will be held July 8-16 in Taipei, Taiwan. Zeller is one of 10 collegians playing for the AIA squad, which is one of two U.S. teams competing at the event. Among the teams competing at the Jones Cup will be national squads from Japan, Korea, Philippines, Qatar, Chinese Taipei and Australia.

Current ESPN basketball analyst and former St. John’s head coach Mike Jarvis will serve as head coach. Joining Zeller on the squad will be Josh Carter (Texas A&M), Tony Danridge (New Mexico), Troy DeVries (New Mexico), Daniel Faris (New Mexico), Boomer Herndon (Belmont), JeRon Jefferson (Montana State), Dominque Kirk (Texas A&M), Christian Moody (Kansas) and Mark Schiavone (The Citadel).

As a freshman, the 6-11, 240-pound Zeller played in 27 of Notre Dame’s 30 games and made nine starts. A McDonald’s All-American as a high school senior in 2005, he scored in double figures twice (11against Fordham and Pittsburgh) and grabbed a career high nine rebounds on three occasions (versus Hofstra, Fordham and Providence). Zeller averaged 3.5 points and 3.3 rebounds while playing an average of 14.1 minutes per game.

Zeller and his AIA teammates will convene in Ohio for a training camp that will include six practices. Following the camp, the team will head to Taiwan and begin play in the round-robin pool play tournament. After the conclusion of the tournament, the team will visit schools, orphanages and perform clinics before returning home to the United States.
