Lex Sweeps Diving Events, Notre Dame Splits With Oakland And Michigan

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Senior Eric Lex was brilliant off the 1- and 3-meter boards Saturday afternoon at the Oakland University Aquatic Center as the Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team split a pair of dual meets to move to 2-1 on the season. The Irish defeated Oakland, 166-132, while Michigan got the best of Notre Dame, 172-120.

Lex was one of five Irish divers to finish among the top six in the 1-meter event by recording 336.60 points. He completed the sweep with 342.40 points in the 3-meter version of the springboard event.

The Irish managed to notch a number of second-place finishes in the double-dual meet. Frank Dyer (200 free, 500 free) and Michael Sullivan (200 backstroke, 200 individual medley) each had a pair while Christopher Johnson (100 breast), Kevin Overholt (50 free) and Joshua Choi (200 breaststroke) added one apiece.

200 Medley Relay: Notre Dame opened the day with a fourth-place finish … Christopher Wills, Johnson, Bill Bass and Overholt teamed to top in at 1:33.35.

1,000 Freestyle: Sullivan went the distance for a sixth-place finish in 9:34.13.

200 Freestyle: Dyer (1:40.59) exploded for a second-place showing … he was 0.19 seconds behind Michigan’s Hassaan Abdel Khalik (1:40.40), who finished first.

100 Backstroke: Wills (51.50) was fourth while Bertie Nel (52.31) rounded out the top six.

100 Breaststroke: Johnson came in second after recording a 58.01 … Mason Weber (58.74) was sixth overall.

200 Butterfly: Michigan claimed the top three spots while Bill Bass (1:52.63) was next in line for a fourth-place finish.

50 Freestyle: Overholt (21.12) was third with Johnson (21.85) and Marshall Sherman (21.93) taking sixth and seventh, respectively.

1-meter Diving: Notre Dame’s first win came when Lex scored 336.60 points off the short board … behind second-place Kasey Allen (321.00) of Michigan, Notre Dame posted four of the next best scores … Nathan Geary (312.35), Wes Villaflor (300.50), Ryan Koter (285.45) and Sean Rademaker (270.70) rounded out the top six.

100 Freestyle: Dyer (46.24) took third as Joshua Nosal (47.48) was fifth and Thomas Van Volkenburg (48.19) was sixth.

200 Backstroke: Notre Dame went 2-3 behind the efforts of two seniors in Sullivan (1:50.04) and Wills (1:51.63).

200 Breaststroke: Choi (2:06.06) was one of four Irish swimmers to finish in the top seven, maxing out with a second-place showing.

500 Freestyle: Dyer continued to excel in the freestyle events, this time taking second in 4:36.63.

100 Butterfly: Bass once again finished among the top of the pack by going 50.78 for third.

3-meter Diving: Lex made it a clean sweep off the boards with 342.40 points for first place … Villaflor (306.60) was third.

200 Individual Medley: Sullivan showed his versatility with a swim worthy of second place … Bass (1:52.94) was third overall, while Choi (1:55.42) tried his hand in the event and dried off with fifth-palace honors to his name.

400 Freestyle Relay: Dyer, Nosal, Overall and Van Volkenburg (3:03.71) stroked their way to second place in 3:03.71 to wrap up the meet.
