NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame junior duo of Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) and Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich.) have been ranked in the preseason Campbell/ITA Rankings, it was announced on Friday. Both players placed in the singles rankings along with the tandem being recognized on the doubles list. Along with her preseason ranking, Frilling has also been selected to compete in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship.
Frilling enters the inaugural season rankings as the eighth ranked player in the nation. Last year, Frilling ended the campaign ranked 14th in the polls. Over her first two years with the Irish, Frilling has compiled a mark of 42-16 during the dual season and sits 57-21 overall. She also was able to climb as high as third in the singles rankings in ’08-09, marking the second-highest ranking in program history (Michelle Dasso – 2nd in ’01).
Frilling also will compete in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship as one of the top 10 seeds in the competition, which gets underway on Oct. 2. The tournament will include six rounds of prequalifying and qualifying and is being hosted by by the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. This will mark the tournaments 26th year.
Mathews opens the year ranked 42nd in the preseason polls after ending last years slate ranked 108th. Over her first two years with the program, Mathews has posted a record of 50-18 including 44-14 in the dual season. Last year while playing exclusively at the No. 2 position, she notched a 17-11 record and captured five wins against nationally ranked foes.
Along with each representing the Irish in the singles rankings, the duo also sits 10th in the doubles poll. The pair has only played as a team twice, winning both matches including a victory against the 24th-ranked pair of Lindsey Stuckey and Evgeniya Vertesheva of Indiana, 8-3.
The inaugural team rankings will be released near the beginning of the dual season on Jan. 4, 2011.
