Kellie Sciacca Receives Second BIG EAST Freshman Of The Week Award

Oct. 22, 2007

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – For the second time this season, University of Notre Dame volleyball freshman Kellie Sciacca (Monument, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week, announced by the league on Monday.

She is now the fifth Irish player to claim the conference honor more than once throughout a season since Notre Dame became a member of the BIG EAST in 1995, joining current teammates Christina Kaelin (2006) and Adrianna Stasiuk (2004) on that list.

The 6-foot-1 middle blocker punched in a solid performance against DePaul this past Friday with nine kills on 15 attempts for a .467 hitting clip. Collectively, the Irish offense generated their best hitting percentage on the season with a .457 mark in the 3-0 sweep.

Sciacca – who totaled four blocks against the Blue Demons – was tied for 56th nationally in blocks per game with 1.33 heading into the contest with DePaul. Only five other freshmen held higher rankings. She is second on the team in blocks/game behind junior Justine Stremick (Langdon, N.D./Langdon Area) and her 1.38 average. Notre Dame is 11th in the nation in that category.

Sciacca and the Irish will head south for a battle in the bayou with LSU on Tuesday, Oct. 23, beginning at 8 p.m. (ET).
