Joel White Joins Women's Swimming And Diving Program

Aug. 19, 2005

Notre Dame head women’s swimming and diving coach Carrie Nixon has completed her staff and announced the hiring of Joel White as an assistant coach. A former assistant at Utah and swimmer at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, White completes the coaching staff, along with diving coach Caiming Xie, in time for Nixon’s first year leading the Irish program.

“We are very happy to have Joel as a part of our coaching staff,” Nixon says.

“He brings a great attitude to the program, knows a lot about swimming and his coaching strengths and knowledge complement mine very well. I know he will do a great job with the team.”

Most recently, White was an assistant coach at the University of Utah, helping the Utes claim their first in-season conference title and send three swimmers to the national championship meet.

A native of Austin, Texas, White has been highly active in the University of Texas swimming program, working the program’s summer camp from 2000-2005. White also was the head swimming coach at Homestead High School in Mequon, Wis., from 2001-03, leading the team to nine All-America honors, five individual state championships and two relay state titles.

“I am so excited to be here and work with a great team at a great school,” White says.

“I know we are going to be successful and enjoy ourselves along the way.”

White graduated from Wisconsin-Milwaukee in December of 2002 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He swam all four years at UWM and was a nine-time conference finalist and team co-captain. He specialized in the 400 individual medley, 500 freestyle and 200 backstroke during his collegiate career.

White also added a master’s degree from the University of Utah in exercise and sport science with an emphasis in psychosocial aspects of sport in May of 2005.

The 2005-06 Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving season begins on Friday, Oct. 7, with the Dennis Stark Relays in Rolf’s Aquatic Center at 6:30 p.m.
