Janicke And Slaggert Named To Team USA Evaluation Camp Roster

SOUTH BEND, Ind.  – Justin Janicke and Landon Slaggert have been invited to participate in USA Hockey’s National Junior Evaluation Camp, set for July 24-August 3 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan.

The camp will include 60 players as USA Hockey evaluates rosters for both the upcoming August and December World Junior Championships. 

The 2022 U.S. National Junior Team will now play in the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship August 9-20 in Edmonton, Alberta, and the final 23-player roster is expected to be announced by August 3. The tournament was originally scheduled for Dec. 26, 2021 – Jan. 5, 2022, in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, but was canceled due to COVID.

The roster for the 2023 U.S. National Junior Team, which will play in the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship Dec. 26, 2022 – Jan. 5, 2023, in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Moncton, New Brunswick, is expected to be announced in mid-December.

Slaggert was on Team USA each of the past two tournaments, scoring for Team USA in the only game it was able to play in 2022 before the COVID postponement last winter and winning gold with Team USA in 2021. 

Notre Dame At The World Junior Championship 

  • In 2021, Landon Slaggert became the first Fighting Irish player to medal at the event since 2018 when current Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Andrew Peeke helped the U.S. secure the bronze in Buffalo. 
  • Slaggert’s gold marked the eighth medal by a Notre Dame player at the event as he also joined Anders Bjork (bronze in 2016), Mario Lucia (gold in 2013), Kyle Palmieri (gold in 2010 and bronze in 2011), Kyle Lawson (bronze in 2007) and Ben Simon (silver in 1997). 
  • Slaggert was Notre Dame’s 23rd player to take part in the World Junior Championship.
  • Previous two-time Fighting Irish participants included Palmieri (2010/11), Ian Cole (2008/09), Rob Globke (2001/02), Connor Dunlop (2000/01), Simon (1997/98) and Jack Brownschidle (1977/79). 

Justin Janicke | Sophomore | Forward | Maple Grove, Minnesota

  • Janicke joined the Irish from the USNTDP last season and as one of college hockey’s youngest players, scored a pair of goals and added eight assists for 10 points in 33 games.
  • Made collegiate debut in home opener against Long Island (Oct. 9). 
  • Recorded first career point with an assist to his brother, Trevor, in 5-2 win over Northern Michigan (Oct. 16). 
  • Tallied an assist on Jack Adams’ goal on the way to a 5-4 overtime victory at Penn State (Jan. 8).
  • Janicke notched both his goals and five assists in the stretch run of the season, scoring his first goal against Penn State (Feb. 4) and adding a goal and an assist in Notre Dame’s 4-2 win over Michigan State (Feb. 19).
  • Assisted on the game’s opening goal in the senior night 2-1 win over No. 2 Michigan (Feb. 26).
  • Selected in the seventh round, 195th overall, by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 NHL Draft.
  • His older brother, Trevor, will be a Fighting Irish senior in 2022-23. 

Landon Slaggert | Junior | Forward | South Bend, Indiana

  • In two seasons, Slaggert has skated in 65 career games while scoring 20 goals and adding 28 assists for 48 points. 
  • Last season as a sophomore, he finished fifth on the team in scoring with 26 points on 12 goals and 14 assists. 
  • He had three game winners and two power-play goals in 2021-22.
  • Tallied first multipoint game of the season with a goal and an assist in 5-1 victory over Wisconsin (Nov. 12). 
  • Finished the weekend series against the Badgers with three points after adding an assist in the game two win (Nov. 12-13).
  • Notched the game-winning goal in the road victory over Penn State (Jan. 7).
  • Notched a goal and two assists, including one assist on the overtime game winner at Ohio State (Jan. 14).
  • Tallied an assist and the overtime game winner in 3-2 overtime victory over Minnesota (Jan. 29).
  • Recorded a goal and an assist in the 7-2 win over Penn State for his third multipoint game in a four-game span (Jan. 14-Feb. 4; 2-5-7).
  • A 2022 Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection, he notched the game-tying goal against North Dakota in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and also assisted on Graham Slaggert’s overtime game winner as the Irish downed the Fighting Hawks 2-1 (March 24).
  • Selected in the third round, 79th overall, by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2020 NHL Draft. 
  • Played his first two seasons at Notre Dame with his older brother, Graham Slaggert, who signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization following his senior season in 2021-22.
