PALM HARBOR, Fla. – The University of Notre Dame women’s golf team is off to a solid start as the Irish concluded the first round of play at the BIG EAST Championship in first place Sunday, at the Innisbrook Golf Resort in Palm Harbor, Fla. Notre Dame has a seven-over par score of 295 through the first 18 holes.

“We still have a lot to take care of and work on,” head coach Susan Holt said. “We can play better than we did in the first round and we need to get better because we are playing for the rest of our season. The competition from here will only keep getting better and better.”

Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton) leads the Irish and the player leaderboard in the first round as the junior shot a 72 to begin the tournament. Huffer maintained consistency through the entire round as she posted par on each hole, except the second hole where she had a bogey, but evened it out with a birdie in the sixth hole.

Senior So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep Academy) and freshman Kristina Nhim (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) are tied for second place after carding a one-over par 73. Park tallied six birdies in the opening round, while Nhim placed four birdies on the board. Park concluded the first half of the round with a two-under par score of 34, which she maintained through the 11th hole.

Freshman Nicole Zhang (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) finished the first 18 holes in a 12th-place tie after registering a 77 on the first day. Zhang had a birdie on the fourth and seventh holes to begin the day. Senior captain Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) rounds out the Irish lineup with a six-over par 78 and is in 17th place.

Overall, the Irish lead Georgetown by 12 strokes as the Hoyas recorded a 307 (+19) to open the league tournament and Louisville is in third place with 308 (+20). South Florida and Rutgers round out the top-five score with 310 (+22) and 312 (+24), respectively. Huffer is in control of the playerboard after posting a 72.
