Irish Turn In Strong Performances Throughout At U.S. Olympic Trials

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving put the finishing touches on a strong 2011-12 season recently at the U.S. Olympic Trials, as the seven-person contingent turned in several impressive swims during the eight-day meet at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb.

The Irish earned 15 top-100 swims (out of 16 opportunities), 10 top-50 finishes and six top-25 performances in the long course metered pool. Highlighting the meet were Notre Dame’s All-Americans Emma Reaney and Kelly Ryan. Reaney, who was an Honorable Mention All-American in the 100 and 200 breast and the 200 IM at March’s NCAA Championships, looked impressive in the 200 IM, earning a spot in the semifinals after finishing ninth in the opening round with a blazing time of 2:14.79. The Lawrence, Kan., native took 13^th in the semis with a time of 2:15.51.

Reaney also placed 23^rd in the 200 breast (2:30.93), 24^th in the 100 breast (1:09.90) and 41^st in the 400 IM (4:52.77).

Ryan turned in a pair of top-25 finishes in the 100 and 200 back. The Hinsdale, Ill., product finished 20^th in the 200 back (2:14.67) and 25^th in the 100 back (1:02.80. She also took 108^th in the 100 free (57.74).

Also turning in strong showings throughout the week were rising senior Kim Holden, who took 45^th in the 200 back (2:15.96) and 47^th in the 100 back (1:03.31) and rising sophomore Bridget Casey, who placed 48^th in the 200 fly (2:15.46).
