Irish To Open Fall Season At The Wolverine Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 2008-09 Notre Dame men’s tennis team will begin the fall season at the Wolverine Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. The three-day event will begin on September 19 and run through September 21. Points will be awarded to individual players for performances in both singles and doubles play at the end of each day.

FORMAT: Each team will play two other teams on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. But, unlike in the dual season, points will be awarded on an individual basis. For example, the No. 1 singles winner will receive eight points down through the No. 8 singles winner, who will receive 1 point. In doubles, the winners at No. 1 will each receive four points, while the winners at No. 4 will each receive one point. At the end of each day, there will be one winner and one runner up based on total point accumulation.

FIELD/IRISH SCHEDULE: In addition to the Irish, the teams participating in the Wolverine Invitational include Miami, Denver and host Michigan. On Sept. 19, the Irish will take part in singles action at 10 a.m. versus Miami, with their doubles matches being played against Denver at 12:30 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 20 the Irish will face Michigan in doubles play at 12:30 p.m. followed by singles play against Denver at 1:30 p.m. To conclude the Invitational, the Irish will face Miami in singles play at 12:30 p.m. and Michigan in doubles play at 1:30 p.m.

NOTRE DAME LINEUP: The nine players comprising the Irish lineup include seniors Brett Helgeson (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley West) and Santiago Montoya (Austin, TX/St. Stephen’s Episcopal School), sophomores Tyler Davis (Nashville, TN/Father Ryan HS), David Anderson (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich HS), Daniel Stahl (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman HS), Stephen Havens (Cincinnati, OH/Hill Christian School) and Matt Johnson (Portage, MI/Portage Central HS), as well as freshmen Niall Fitzgerald and Casey Watt (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland).

NEXT UP: The fall season continues for the Irish when they play host to the Tom Fallon Invitational on Oct. 10-12. The three-day event will be held at Notre Dame’s Courtney Courts.
