May 4, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame junior men’s swimmer Bertie Nel recently took part in the annual NCAA Inclusion Forum at the NCAA National Office in Indianapolis.

The NCAA Inclusion Forum brings together intercollegiate athletics leaders who strive to improve the educational and professional environment for student-athletes, coaches and staff. Forum sessions cover a broad array of topics pertaining to policy, research and best practices for racial and ethnic minorities, women, international student-athletes, LGBTQ and disability-access to sport.

Nel, a native of Tzaneen, South Africa, shared his experiences as an international student-athlete during “The International University Sports Experience” seminar alongside Valparaiso men’s soccer player Diego Calix and former Illinois State track and field athlete Scott Krapf. Each of the guest speakers discussed their personal engagement in university athletics, and how they feel the inclusion of international student-athletes enriches the NCAA experience.
