Irish Sweep Individual Titles at ACC Championships

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Fighting Irish had an impressive day of competition at the 2023 ACC Fencing Championships. They tallied eleven medals on the first day of competition in the individual events. The Irish swept all the individual event titles for the first time since 2020.

The women’s squad proved to be strong once again as they swept in the sabre competition and picked up three other medals. Kara Linder took gold, Jadeyn Williams took silver, and Atara Greenbaum finished with bronze. Williams and Greenbaum had to face each other for a spot in the finals. Williams came out on top to face teammate Linder. In women’s epee, Kaylin Hsieh took gold, and teammate Eszter Muhari took bronze. Nicole Pustilnik finished strong in foil as she took gold. 

Karina Yaroshenko finished in fourth place in the foil competition after making it to the semifinals. Teammates Paige Luong took fifth and Tianji Lukins took eighth place. Miriam Grady and Michaela Joyce also represented the Irish in the epee competition. Grady took fourth place after falling in the semifinals, and Joyce took fifth place. Neve Harrison finished in fourteenth in the sabre competition.

The men’s squad continued the success later in the day with five more individual medals. The sabre team faced each other in George Bivins and Luke Linder going up against each other for a spot in the finals. Linder came out on top to face Terrence Lee of Duke in the finals. Linder claimed gold against Lee, while Bivins claimed bronze. Henry Nadile also fenced claiming eighth, along with teammate Sean Moon taking tenth.

In foil, Philip Dority faced teammate Paulo Morais for a spot in the finals. Dority won to go up against Brian Wang of Boston College. Dority claimed the men’s foil gold medal over Boston College and Morais took fourth place. Jack Ousler finished in seventh place with teammate Jason Zhao taking tenth.

In the epee competition three Notre Dame fencers were in the semifinal bouts, Nick Candela, Mauran Osman-Touson and Jonathan Hamilton-Meikle. Making it to the finals was Osman-Touson and Candela for an all Notre Dame epee final. Osman-Touson took the gold over his teammate Candela who finished with silver. Hamilton-Meikle finished in fourth place along with Noah Silvers finishing in sixth place.
