Irish Split Doubleheader on Senior Day

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team earned a split of its Sunday doubleheader at the Courtney Tennis Center. In the first home outdoor match of the season, the Fighting Irish dropped a 4-3 decision to the Florida State Seminoles, but bounced back to beat the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 6-1. The 44^th-ranked Irish are now 13-9 on the season and 5-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Prior to the start of the first match of the day, the Irish recognized senior Maeve Koscielski who was competing at the Courtney Tennis Center for the final time. Koscielski, a team captain this year, was the lone senior on this year’s squad.

The day started with the 41^st-ranked Seminoles. The Irish dropped the doubles point, falling at No. 1 and No. 3.

In singles play, the Irish split the six matches, getting wins at flights 2, 3, and 5. Andreach earned a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 2. Yashna Yellayi earned a come-from-behind win at No. 3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Freshman Carrie Beckman added the final point with a 7-5, 7-6 win.

The nightcap saw a revamped Irish lineup against the Golden Grizzlies. The Irish took the doubles point as Maria Olivia Castedo and Page Freeman earned a 6-1 win in the top flight. In the third flight, Carrie Beckman and Nibedita Ghosh earned a 6-1 win to secure the point.

Singles play saw the Irish earn straight set victories by Castedo, Meghan Coleman, Koscielski, and Katherine Bellia. Sydney Sforzo earned a straight-set victory of her own, and won the final set 7-6 (2).
