Irish Sit In 10th Place Following Opening Round Of The Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational

March 26, 2010

AUSTIN, Texas – The Irish women’s golf team stands in 10th place (out of 17 teams) following the first round of the 2010 Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas. Individually, the Irish were led by the tandem of senior Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) and junior So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton (Fla.)/Preparatory Academy), who each carded a two-over par 74 on the day, placing each in a tie for 12th in the individual standings.

The 74 for Park marks her lowest score of the spring season after struggling in the first two tournaments with six rounds carded in the 80’s. She cemented the 74 by finishing strong on the back nine, carding a one-under par, 35, aided by three birdies. Overall on the round, Park was able to score in the red on five holes, while only recording three bogies and two doubles.

Brophy navigated through the first 18 holes with extreme consistency, notching 14 pars on her first round card with one birdie and three bogies. The 74 marks her lowest score carded with the Irish at the Betsy Rawls Invitational, besting a 75 that she fired at the event last season.

Sophomore Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton), who has started the spring season strong by averaging a 74.33 per-round score through the first two events, carded a first-day 77 (+5) and sits in a tie for 41st after the opening round of 18. Huffer, much like Park, used a an efficient back nine to close out her opening 18 holes of competition, booking a one-over par 37, helped by six pars and a birdie.

Junior Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), who shot a six-over par 78 on the opening day and sits in a tie for 52nd, was the final score counted toward the Notre Dame team score. She posted a pair of three-over par nine hole scores, featuring 11 pars and a birdie.

Senior co-captains Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head (S.C.) Prep School) rounded out the Irish field by notching an 11-over par, 83 on day one and is tied for 83rd. She finished the back nine with a two-over par ledger, including her lone birdie of the round coming at the par-5, 14th hole.

UCLA leads the 17-team field following the first day of competition after finishing with a seven-over par, 295. Shannon Fish of Texas and Sarah Zwartynski of Texas A&M hold the individual lead after each shot a two-under par, 70 on the opening 18 holes.
