Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s basketball team will face Monmouth in the opening round of the 2007 U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam Tournament at the University of the Virgin Islands. The 8th annual event will be held Nov. 16-19 at the University of Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.

Notre Dame returns three starters from last year’s 2006-07 squad that finished 24-8 and played in the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in seven seasons. This will be the Irish’s first-ever appearance in the Paradise Jam event. Monmouth is coming off of a 12-18 campaign. The Irish lead the all-time series 3-0 with the last meeting between the two schools taking place in 2001 (an 85-48 Notre Dame victory) at the Hawaii-Pacific Thanksgiving Classic.

The six other participants in the tournament will be two other ’07 NCAA participants — Georgia Tech (20-12) and Winthrop (29-5) — and Charlotte (14-16), Illinois-Chicago (14-18), Baylor (15-16) and Wichita State (17-14).

Three of the eight teams competing are making their second visit to the Paradise Jam — Winthrop (third in 2004), Wichita State (second in 2003) and Monmouth (third in ’03).

Competition begins on Nov. 16 with consecutive-day action culminating in the championship game on Nov. 19. Georgia Tech will tip off against Charlotte on the first day at 2:00 p.m. The other matchup in the top half of the bracket will pit Illinois-Chicago against Winthrop at 4:00 p.m. Baylor and Wichita State meet at 7:00 p.m. in the first game, followed by Notre Dame’s contest against Monmouth at 9:30 p.m. All games are Atlantic Standard Time (one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time).

Two games will played on Nov. 17 (losing teams from the first day of competition) and Nov. 18 (winning teams from day one) at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. The final day of competition will include four contests with game times set for 2:00 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
