Irish Rightfielder Named Consensus Freshman All-American

June 22, 2000

Notre Dame rightfielder Brian Stavisky (Port Allegany, Pa.) has been named a Freshman All-American by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball magazines-becoming the third Irish rookie to earn that double distinction during the last four seasons.

Stavisky was one of 15 players named to Baseball America’s second team Freshman All-America squad and was one of 44 players named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, which names one large team rather than selecting first, second and third teams. The 6-5, 230-pound Stavisky was one of 33 players selected by both BA and CB and the lefthander’s 14 home runs during the 2000 season ranked fourth among all freshmen in Division I baseball.

The Notre Dame baseball program has produced nine Freshman All-Americans during the past 11 seasons, including two other consensus selections: infielder Brant Ust (’97) and righthander Aaron Heilman (’98). Both of those players were first-team honorees by BA, with Heilman also receiving co-national freshman of the year honors from CB. Current sophomore catcher Paul O’Toole was named to CB’s Freshman All-America team for the ’99 season.

Stavisky’s 14 home runs broke Ust’s mark for homers by an ND freshman (11) and ranked fourth among the nation’s freshmen in 2000, behind only Nebraska’s Matt Hopper (21), LSU’s Mike Fontenot (17) and Maine’s Joe Drapeau (16). The surprisingly quick Stavisky also shared the BIG EAST Conference lead in triples during the 2000 season (with five) and finished fifth among Irish regulars with a .298 season batting avg. while ranking third on the team with 45 RBI-a mark which tied the Irish freshman RBI record, set by Jeff Wagner in 1996.

NOTES: Stavisky joined sophomore CF Steve Stanley as the only ND players to appear in all 64 games during the 2000 season (they both started all 64), with the duo becoming the 4th and 5th ND players ever to play or start in 64-plus games … he led the Irish in home runs (14, 3rd BIG EAST, tied for 10th in ND history), triples (5, 1st BE) and at-bats (248, besting Stanley’s ND freshman record of 242 and raking 2nd in ND history, 10 shy of Dan Peltier’s ’89 total) while ranking 2nd on the team in slugging pct. (.569), runs (50, 9th BE), total bases (141, 3rd BE) and two-out RBI (19), 3rd in hits (74, 10th BE), RBI (45) and doubles (15) and 4th in walks (18) and stolen bases (5-of-10) … Stavisky finished 5th among Irish regulars with a .298 season batting average, with his other 2000 stats including three times hit-by-pitch, just one time grounding into a double play, a .351 on-base pct., two sacrifice flies and three errors in 100 fielding chances (.970) … his team-high 39 strikeouts included just two in the 11 games prior to the NCAAs (when he had six in five games) … his situational batting included a .309 batting avg. vs. RHPs, .281 vs. LHPs, .283 with runners on base, .303 with runners in scoring position and .289 with two outs-plus a .294 on-base pct. when leading off the inning … his season highlights included a two-run home run to beat Rutgers in the bottom of the 9th (4-3) and a 4-for-5 game in the 15-7 BIG EAST Tournament win over Pittsburgh (2 RBI, 2 R) … in BIG EAST Conference regular-season games, Stavisky ranked 2nd in the conference for home runs (7), 2nd in triples (3) and total bases (61), 3rd in slugging pct. (.663) and 6th in RBI (21) … in addition to the players listed above, the other ND players to receive Freshman All-America honors (since 1990) include: RHP David Sinnes (’90, 1st team, BA), RHP Pat Leahy (’90, CB), 2B Greg Layson (’91, 1st team, BA), OF Paul Failla (’92, 2nd team, BA) and C Dennis Twombley (’94, CB) … ND has produced a Freshman All-American in eight of the last 11 seasons (all but ’93, ’95 and ’96) … Rutgers RHP Bob Brownlie was named to BA’s first team while Villanova RHP Brian Slocum was a third-team honoree by BA … just four conferences produced more BA Freshman All-Americans than the BIG EAST (8 for the ACC, 5 for the Big 12 and 4 each for the SEC and CAA) … the only other players on the BA team from schools in the Midwest were Michigan State OF Bob Malek, Illinois DH Andy Schutzenhofer, Ball State P Bryan Bullington, Indiana State P Mitch Stetter and Ohio State 1B Nick Swisher .
