BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team rebounded from a tough round of matches Friday that saw the squad post three wins to record eight match victories on Saturday at the Indiana Invitational. The tournament concludes Sunday with the final round of singles kicking off at 10:30 a.m. (ET).
Katherine White (Columbus, Ga.), playing in the third flight, produced the lone win for the Irish in singles on Friday, knocking off Indiana’s Sophie Garre, 7-5, 6-4. She would fall in her match on Saturday, however, losing a close contest to Georgia’s Lauren Herring, 6-4, 7-5.
In flight number one, Jennifer Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) kicked off her sophomore season in a showdown against Chelsey Gullickson of Georgia, who enters the year ranked ninth in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings. The Bulldog senior proved too much for Kellner, defeating her 6-4, 6-1. Kellner bounced back on Saturday, registering a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kansas State’s Ana Gomez.
Chrissie McGaffigan (Davenport, Iowa) took to the court in flight two on Friday, dropping a 6-2, 6-0 contest to Alecia Kauss of Indiana. The Irish junior then moved to flight three for Saturday’s match, dispatching Alina Jerjomina of Georgia, 6-1, 6-2.
Sophomore Britney Sanders (Ontario, Calif.) competed in flight two on both days of action, falling to Kate Fuller of Georgia (6-4, 6-2) on Friday before defeating Marketa Trousilova of Kansas State (6-1, 6-1) on Saturday.
Julie Sabacinski (Plantation, Fla.) and JoHanna Manningham (Mishawaka, Ind.) rounded out the Notre Dame singles matches. Sabacinski went 0-2 in her matches, falling to Micah Hermdorf of Abilene Christian (6-4, 6-4) in flight three on Friday before losing to Katie Klyczek of Indiana (6-4, 6-4) in flight four action on Saturday. Manningham only played one match over the first two days, losing to Shannon Murday of Indiana in flight four, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles action, the Irish have posted seven victories through two days; including winning five of the six matches they took part in on Saturday. Sanders and White teamed to knock off Bonacic and Gomez of Kansas State, 9-7, on Friday. Kellner and McGaffigan posted the other doubles victory for the Irish on Friday, taking down Niedermayerova and Trousilva of Kansas State, 8-1.
The remaining Friday doubles matches saw Sanders and White fall to Gullickson and Gilchrist of Georgia (8-1), Manningham and Sabacinski lose to Georgia’s Kowase and Hart (8-4) and Manningham and Sabacinski upended by Abilene Christian’s Mongin and Hermsdorf (8-1).
After losing their lone match on Friday, Sanders and White bounced back Saturday to post a 2-0 record on the day with victories over Chupa and Klyczek of Indiana (8-3) and Fuller and Herring of Georgia (8-6). Sabacinski also posted a perfect ledger on Saturday, playing in a pair of split doubles matches. In her first contest, she teamed with Kansas State’s Borau to knock off Bonacic and Gomez of Kansas State (8-6) before later teaming with Chuda of Kansas State for an 8-5 win over Snodgrass and Borau of Kansas State.
The team of Kellner and McGaffigan posted a 1-1 mark in Saturday’s action, defeating Kowase and Hart of Georgia (8-2) before suffering a tiebreaker setback against Georgia’s tandem of Gullickson and Gilchrist, 9-8 (7-1).
