NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team will compete in the Shamrock Invitational Saturday at the Rolfs Aquatic Center with two separate sessions, the first set to begin at 9:30 a.m. (ET) and the second at 4 p.m. The dual meet with West Virginia is not only the final home competition for the Irish, but also the final meet before the BIG EAST Championship set for Feb. 20-23.
This will be the third BIG EAST foe Notre Dame has met this season. The Irish are currently 1-1 against the conference slate and they will look to improve upon the record with a win over the Mountaineers. It will be the second meeting between the two teams with Notre Dame holding the advantage, 1-0. The last time the Irish met with West Virginia was just a year ago when head coach Carrie Nixon led Notre Dame to defeat the Mountaineers, 222.5-147.5, in the 2007 Shamrock Invitational.
“We’re really looking forward to competing against West Virginia at home,” Nixon said. ” It will be our last opportunity to work on races and our race strategy before the BIG EAST Championship in a couple of weeks. It will be a great final home meet for our seniors to go out on.”
Going into Friday’s competition, the Irish women hold the fastest times in five individual events and one relay: Amywren Miller in the 50 free (23.03), Christa Riggins in the 200 free (1:48.42), Casey Wagner in the 1,650 free (16:43.28), Sam Maxwell in the 100 breast (1:02.48), Katie Casey in the 200 fly (2:01.09) and the 400-medley relay (3:26.58). Each of the individual times listed are also NCAA `B’ cut times. Notre Dame has at least one swimmer in the top five in nearly every event.
