Irish Open 2022 Season vs. Central Michigan and #23 Michigan

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The fifth-ranked Irish are set to open the 2022 campaign with home contests against Central Michigan on Friday, February 11 at 7:00 p.m. EST and #23 Michigan on Sunday, February 13 at 6:00 p.m. EST. Both contests are set to be played indoors at Loftus Sports Center. The Central Michigan game will be streamed live via ACC Network Extra and the matchup against Michigan will be aired live on the ACC Network.

FOR STARTERS

  • The #5 Irish the 2022 season with a pair of matchups against Central Michigan this Friday (Feb. 11) and Sunday (Feb. 11) in South Bend, Ind. at the Loftus Sports Center .

  • The Irish will open the season with five of six contests at home including Northwestern (Feb. 23), Syracuse (Feb. 26), and Virginia (March 6).

  • Notre Dame is coming off a 2021 campaign in which it finished 11-7 and earned an NCAA Tournament berth.

OPENING DAY

  • Notre Dame owns a 7-2 mark in season openers under head coach Christine Halfpenny and is 20-4 all-time in its first game of the season.
  • In season openers at home, the Irish hold a 5-2 record.
  • This is the second consecutive year Notre Dame is opening the season at home after they opened the 2020 campaign with an 18-3 triumph over Marquette.

THE NOTRE DAME-CMU SERIES

  • The Irish and Chippewas will be meeting for the second time this week with Notre Dame leading the all-time series 1-0.

  • Notre Dame earned a 24-4 victory in its first-ever game against Central Michigan on Feb. 16, 2020.

  • Erin McBride (4G) and Madison Ahern (3G, A) each added four points to the Irish offensive effort, which saw 10 different players collect points in the victory.

 THE NOTRE DAME – MICHIGAN SERIES

  • The Irish and Wolverines will be meeting for the fourth time this week with Notre Dame leading the all-time series 3-0.
  • Notre Dame earned a 14-8 victory in its last matchup against Michigan on April 3, 2018.
  • In their last meeting, the Irish had nine players with two or more ground balls.

PRESEASON HONORS

  • Five Irish were named Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-Americans including Kasey Choma (Second Team), Madison Ahern (HM), Maddie Howe (HM), Jackie Wolak (HM), and Bridget Deehan (HM).

  • Kasey Choma was named to the USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason All-American squad, and was also ranked among the top 50 lacrosse players in college checking in at #34.

  • Kasey Choma, Madison Ahern, and Bridget Deehan, were each named to the Preseason All-ACC Team (Feb. 8) 

  • Notre  Dame was tabbed fourth in the Preseason ACC Coaches Poll.

  • Kasey Choma was tabbed 34th in the nation by Inside Lacrosse in December of 2021. In her career, she has played in 25 games, scoring 67 goals on 131 shots. She has picked up 29 ground balls, and 29 draw controls.

POWER IN NUMBERS

  • Defensively, Notre Dame returns 11 players who registered two or more caused turnovers during the 2021 campaign. 

  • In net, Bridget Deehan looks to build off of a 2021 campaign in which she ranked third in the country in saves and second in the ACC with a .452 save percentage en route to being named IWLCA First Team All-American.

NEWCOMERS

  • The Irish welcome a 7-member freshman class as part of the 35-player roster, which includes two attackers, three midfielders, two goaltenders . 
  • Midfielder/Attacker Ava Krystinik was an All-American and Under Armour All-American Watchlist honoree in 2021. She also particpated in the U.S. Lacrosse National Tournament in 2019.
  • Grace Weigand, a midfielder, was selected as an Under Armour, U.S. Lacrosse and Adrenaline All-American in 2021 while being named seventh-best recruit in America by Inside Lacrosse. She was also the top female athlete in Colorado by MaxPreps. 
  • Malie Follet, earned First Team All-League honors for the second time as a senior in 2021 for G. Ray Bodley High School.
