Five Things To Know – Davidson

  • The University of Notre Dame baseball team will play its first midweek game of 2017 as the Irish visit Davidson College on Tuesday, March 14. Davidson is the alma mater of Irish head coach Mik Aoki. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET. The game can be heard live on WatchND and 103.1 FM. There is also a paid video feed available via the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Irish are slated to send senior southpaw Scott Tully to the hill, while the Wildcats will counter with sophomore righthander Allen Barry.
  • Mik Aoki played for Davidson, seeing action at second, third and catcher. Aoki still ranks as one of the Wildcats’ best hitters thanks to a career .335 batting average and .547 slugging percentage. He capped his career as a senior by leading the team with a .365 average while adding 20 doubles.
  • Freshman first baseman Daniel Jung has reached base in seven straight games (he had a six-game hitting streak entering the series finale at Clemson). The streak has coincided with his break into the starting lineup at the USA Baseball-Irish Classic. In seven games as a starter, Jung is 9-for-22 with a pair of home runs.
  • Since a few defensive switches, the Irish defense has continued to show improvement. Notre Dame was fielding just .933 after the first two weeks of the season entering the USA Baseball-Irish Classic. Over that weekend, Aoki moved Kyle Fiala to third base, Cole Daily to shortstop and Nick Podkul to second, while inserting Daniel Jung at first base. In the seven games since (four at the USA Baseball-Irish Classic and three games at No. 9 Clemson), the Irish fielding percentage has been .976, and Notre Dame did not commit an error in the final two games of the three-game set at Clemson.
  • Notre Dame continues its spring break trip with a visit to Pittsburgh this weekend for a three-game set. Game one is set for 3 p.m. ET on Friday, March 17. The entire series will be available live on ACC Network Extra and WatchND.
