April 23, 2004

Box Score

Notre Dame, Ind. – Johns Hopkins’ freshman attacker Mary Key scored her third goal of the game with 3:24 left in the game to break a 12-12 tie and the Blue Jays held on for the 13-12 win over sixth-ranked Notre Dame at Moose Krause Stadium on Friday night.

Key finished the game with five points (three goals and two assists) and teammate Kelly Putnam added her own five-point game (four goals and one assist) to offset Notre Dame’s Meredith Simon who racked up six points (three goals and three assists) in the first half to lead the Irish into the first intermission with a 7-6 lead.

The loss, the third in a row for the Irish after a 10-0 start, drops Notre Dame to 10-3 on the season while Johns Hopkins improves to 12-2 on the year.

Putnam opened the scoring just 29 seconds into the game with a free-position shot for a 1-0 lead. The teams traded goals throughout the half with Crysti Foote (two goals), Lauren Fischer and Mary McGrath joining Simon on the scoresheet. Simon, a Tewaaraton Trophy candidate, scored the 100th goal of her Notre Dame career just over eight minutes into the game to tie the score at 2-2. Her free-position goal (her third goal of the half) with 5:14 left gave the Irish their first lead of the game and McGrath’s goal with 3:43 gave Notre Dame a 7-5 lead.

Putnam scored twice in the first half as did Keys with Keys’ unassisted goal with 2:02 left cutting the Notre Dame lead to 7-6.

In the second half, Johns Hopkins went on the offensive with the first four goals of the half in a span of 5:26. Heidi Pearce made it 7-7 just 1:05 into the stanza. Putnam scored twice (27:43 and 25:15) to make it 9-7 and Meagan Voight closed out the run at 24:34 for a 10-7 advantage.

An Irish timeout slowed the Blue Jays momentum. Kassen Delano cut the lead to 10-8 off an Abby Owen assist at 23:42. Steph Janice made it 11-8 less than a minute-and-a-half later with 22:28 left in the game.

Notre Dame would rally and score the next three goals. Owen scored unassisted with 14:39 left followed by a Jackie Bowers free-position goal at 12:46. Bowers than set up McGrath for her second goal of the game making it 11-11 with 11:11 left in the contest.

Marlena Wittelsberger beat Irish goalkeeper Carol Dixon in close with 9:19 left but McGrath answered back with 6:23 remaining for a 12-12 tie. That set up Key’s winning goal for the 13-12 Johns Hopkins victory.

The Irish had several chances in the final moments but Blue Jay goalkeeper Lauren Riddick preserved the win with a big save on a Simon free-position shot with 43 seconds left in the game.

In the game, Johns Hopkins outshot the Irish by a 36-20 margin. Dixon made 13 saves for the Irish while Riddick had five saves in the game for the Blue Jays.

Notre Dame will look to snap its three-game losing streak on Sunday when the Irish travel to Piscataway, New Jersey to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in their final road game of the season. Game time is 12:00 noon (EDT).
