EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team currently resides in second place after Thursday’s second day of competition at the 2007 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships in the Nassau County Aquatic Center. The Irish trail West Virginia 273-264 heading into the third day of competition on Friday. Notre Dame senior Ted Brown (Kokomo, Ind./Western) posted a second-place finish in the 500-yard free and the Irish also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Brown clocked a season-best and NCAA consideration time of 4:26.13 in the 500 free to collect the eighth all-BIG EAST honor of his career. The Irish also had all-conference performers in the 200 free relay as John Lytle (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area), Tim Kegelman (Yorktown, Va./Tabb), Louis Cavadini (South Bend, Ind./Riley) and Andrew Hoffman (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) teamed to post a season-best mark of 1:21.35 to place second.

Kegelman, a senior, now has a school-record 11 all-BIG EAST honors. He has earned two so far during the 2007 conference meet.

Rounding out the top-five of the 11-team field is Pittsburgh (149), Louisville (137) and Rutgers (127).

Friday’s action will feature the 400-yard IM, 100-yard fly, 200-yard free, 100-yard breast, 100-yard back, men’s three-meter diving and the 400-yard medley relay. Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m., while finals are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. The meet concludes on Saturday with the final two sessions.

THURSDAY EVENING SESSION RECAP (all events are finals):

500-Yard Freestyle: West Virginia’s Zoltan Povazsai took first in a time of 4:22.97. Ted Brown earned all-BIG EAST honors by placing second for Notre Dame in a season-best and NCAA consideration time of 4:26.13. The Irish also took spots four through seven. Jeff Wood placed fourth in a season-best time of 4:28.17, while Jay Vanden Berg was right behind him in fifth with a mark of 4:28.56. Brian Freeman (4:30.02) and Rob Seery (4:30.78) both registered career-best times to finish sixth and seventh, respectively.

200-Yard IM: Vali Preda from Louisville placed first by touching the wall in 1:47.90. Alan Carter was the top finisher for the Fighting Irish as he placed seventh in a career-best time of 1:51.39.

50-Yard Freestyle: West Virginia’s Andrew Langenfeld finished in 20.28 to place first. Louis Cavadini was the Irish’s top finisher as he clocked a career-best time of 20.58 to place 10th. Notre Dame freshman John Lytle clocked a season-best time of 20.75 to finish 12th, while fellow freshman Andrew Hoffman was 16th overall in a time of 21.16. He posted a season-best time of 20.93 during the morning’s preliminary session.

200-Yard Freestyle Relay: The Notre Dame quartet of John Lytle, Tim Kegelman, Louis Cavadini and Andrew Hoffman clocked a season-best time of 1:21.35 to place second overall and earn all-BIG EAST honors. West Virginia (Andrew Langenfeld, Zoltan Povazsai, Ivan Tolic, Nick Delic) took first in 1:18.89.
