South Bend, Ind. – The Irish rowing team prepped for its final regatta of the fall season by hosting Michigan and Michigan State at the Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Three races — varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four — were held on the St. Joseph’s River. Notre Dame will compete on Sunday (October 30) at the Head of the Elk in Elkhart, Ind.
Each of the three schools entered two boats in the varsity eight race. The Michigan State crews finished one-two in the race with its top boat registering a time of 14:03.4 and its “B” shell recording a time of 14:15.1. The Michigan “A” crew was third in 14:17.1, while Notre Dame “A” and Notre Dame “B” finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Michigan’s “B” boat was sixth in 14:48.1
Notre Dame’s top crew of coxswain Maria Romano, Ankica Jedry, Amanda Polk, Mary Quinn, Laura Pearson, Casey Fairbanks, Meg Boyle, Andrea Doud and Sarah Palandech posted a time of 14:23.8, while the boat of Shannan Lettieri, Jessica Guzik, Alyssa Close, Danielle Stealy, Julie Sobolewski, Lindsay McQuaid, Pamela Jefson, Melissa Felker and Sarah Kate Hafner were 16 seconds behind in 14:39.1.
The second race of the afternoon had eight entrants in the novice eight event. Michigan’s top crew won the race in 15:33.6, while Michigan State’s “A” boat was second in 16:08.0. The Irish’s top novice eight boat, consisting of coxswain Sarah Sullivan, Amanda Gonzales, Mallory Glass, Anni Nowhitney, Megan Black, Lauren Buck, Laura Petnuch, Vanessa Milano and Courtney Hummel finished third in 16:27.9. Michigan and Michigan State’s “B” boats were fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 16:37.0 and 16:37.7. Notre Dame’s “B” crew of coxswain Kim Tran, Erica Copeland, Katie Buza, Christy Carr, Kelsey Reno, Megan Grebe, Amy Arellano, Stephanie Bauer and Bridget Leone earned a sixth-place finish in 17:13.6, followed by Michigan State’s “C” boat in 17:23.1. Michigan’s third boat took eighth in 19:15.7.
Seven boats competed in the varsity four event, the afternoon’s final race. Notre Dame had three boats entered in the race, while Michigan and Michigan State each had two entrants. Michigan State’s “A” and “B” boats were first and second in the race finishing with times of 16:06.6 and 16:32.1. Michigan’s “B” crossed the finish line in 16:46.3, while Notre Dame’s “C” crew of coxswain Ko Un Park, Danielle Leary, Shannon Cassel, Erica Catro-Larsen and Mary Kate McNamara were less than two seconds behind the Wolverine boat in 16:48.0. Notre Dame’s “B” and “A” boats placed fifth and sixth, respectively, with time of 16:54.8 and 16:58.0. The Irish “B” crew was comprised of coxswain Christina Padayhag, Ashley St. Pierre, Kate Sylvia, Elli Greybar and Alyssa Teves, while coxswain Eileen Froehlke, Kendra Short, Allison Marsh, Brittany Burnham and Betsy Madison rowed in the “A” boat. Michigan’s top boat was seventh in the race in 17:03.7.
