Irish Head To Evanston And Northwestern In NCAA First Round

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team will see a familiar face in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as the Irish travel to No. 2 seed Northwestern for a Saturday or Sunday matchup with the Wildcats, the NCAA announced on Sunday night.

The Irish (13-4) will see the Wildcats (17-2) for the second time in three weeks and for the fourth time in Notre Dame’s seven trips to the NCAAs. Notre Dame also played at Northwestern in the first round of the 2004, 2008 and 2010 NCAA Tournaments.

The two foes last played in Evanston on April 25, with the Wildcats defeating the Irish, 17-7.

For the second time this season, the Irish will be playing the Wildcats after a loss to Florida. Northwestern lost to the No. 1 seed Gators, 14-7, in the American Lacrosse Conference championship game on Saturday.

Notre Dame is coming off a heart-breaking loss to two-time BIG EAST Champion Loyola (Md.) on Thursday, 11-9, in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship.

In its tournament history, Notre Dame is 4-6 with three quarterfinal appearances, including a Final Four berth in 2006.
