Irish Head Off For Summer Ball

24 Irish athletes will be playing summer ball for 17 teams in eight leagues all across the country.

NOTRE DAME, Ind — A number of Notre Dame baseball student-athletes have dispersed across the the country for their summer ball assignments. A total of 24 Irish athletes will be playing summer ball for 17 teams in eight leagues all across the country from Massachusetts to California.

The Irish are sending four players to the Cape Cod League where most of them will still be teammates this summer. Joe Boyle, Niko Kavadas and Tommy Vail all will suit up for the Harwich Mariners while Tommy Sheehan will play for the Falmouth Commodores. Each of the four student-athletes had breakout seasons in their sophomore campaigns for the Irish.

Boyle was one of the high-leverage relievers out of the bullpen for the Irish this past season. He made 18 appearances over 25.2 innings, struck out 39, held batters to a .157 batting average and tallied a 3-3 record with two saves.

Kavadas tapped into a power surge this season, leading the team with 12 home runs and 43 RBI. It was the most home runs in a season since Trey Mancini hit 12 during the 2012 season for the Irish. Kavadas started all 54 games this past season and also led the team in slugging percentage (.517) and on-base percentage (.390).

Vail was another shutdown reliever in the late innings this season while also making some midweeks starts for the Irish. The sophomore lefty made 25 appearances across 44 innings, struck out 61 and held opponents to a .157 batting average. Vail led the team with six saves and held a 3-2 record with a 3.27 ERA.

Sheehan was the Friday starter and the workhorse for the Irish this season. He led the team with 92.1 innings pitched which was the most since 2013 when Adam Norton tallied 116.1. He led the ACC with two complete games which was the most in a season since Michael Hearne had two during the 2016 season.

Notre Dame also has players in the California Collegiate League, Coastal Plain League, New England Collegiate Baseball League, Northwoods League, Texas Collegiate League and the West Coast League. A full list of where each player is going this summer is listed below.
