Final Stats

Notre Dame, Ind. – Sophomore midfielder Jane Stoeckert (Mendham, N.J.) turned in a career-high six-point game with three goals and three assists to lead 12th-ranked Notre Dame to a 16-11 win over California on Saturday afternoon at the Loftus Center. Meghan Murphy (Sr., Centennial, Colo.) added two goals and two assists and Mary Carpenter (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) added three goals as the Irish bounced back from Friday night’s home loss to Duke.

Stoeckert set personal bests in the game in goals, assists and points while Carpenter equaled her career high with three goals. For Murphy, the four-point game was her fourth of the season. Caitlin McKinney (Jr., Lafayette Hill, Pa.), Jillian Byers (So., Northport, N.Y.) and Heather Ferguson (Jr., Newtown Square, Pa.) each scored twice in the game with Lena Zentgraf (Sr., Charlottesville, Va.) and Gina Scioscia (Fr., Summit, N.J.) scored one goal each in the win.

Senior Laura Cavallo led the Golden Bears with four goals and an assist in the game. Madeleine Dale scored twice and five others added single goals as Cal dropped its third straight game to a team from the Midwest.

The win improved Notre Dame to 10-3 on the season while California fell to 5-4 on the year. The Golden Bears play on Monday at Northwestern while the Irish are off until Saturday, April 14 when they play host to Georgetown in a BIG EAST conference game.

Notre Dame got off to a slow start in this game, falling behind 5-2 in the first 11 minutes of the game. Dale opened the scoring with a goal 6:18 into the contest to put Cal up 1-0 and Cavallo got her first of the game 43 seconds later on a free-position shot for a 2-0 lead.

McKinney answered back with a free-positon tally at 22:34 to cut the lead to 2-1. Alyse Kennedy (21:53) and Stoeckert (19:51) traded goals to make it a 3-2 game. Liz Reifsnyder made it 4-2 at 19:08 and Danni Zuralow built the lead to 5-2 with an unassisted goal at 18:50. Her goal resulted in an Irish timeout as head coach Tracy Coyne looked to get her team back on track.

The break seemed to work wonders as the Irish ran off the final six goals of the first half with Byers scoring twice and four others getting single goals.

Byers converted an Alicia Billings (So., Potomac, Md.) feed from behind the goal for her first of the game at 17:25. McKinney and Stoeckert combined on a nice passing play 33 seconds later to cut the Cal lead to 5-4.

Byers scored unassisted at 15:54 to tie the game at 5-5 and it would stay that way for over 10 minutes. Heather Ferguson put the Irish ahead to stay with her first of the game with just 5:05 left in the half. Carpenter started her scoring spree with 2:37 left in the half and Scioscia closed the scoring with her fifth goal of the year with just 36 seconds left in the half for an 8-5 Notre Dame lead.

The Irish goal streak would go to seven straight goals and the lead to 9-5 just 11 seconds into the second half as Stoeckert burst through the defense and fired a shot past Golden Bear goalkeeper Hilary Lynch.

Elizabeth Jahp ended Notre Dame’s seven-goal run for Cal with a free-position goal over six minutes into the second half and snapped a 17:31 minute goal-less drought for the Golden Bears.

Murphy scored her first goal of the afternoon at 19:17 to give the Irish a 10-6 lead and Carpenter’s second goal at 17:27 made it 11-6.

Cavallo got one back for California with 14:20 remaining in the game to cut the Notre Dame lead to four goals at 11-7. That would be as close as the Golden Bears would get though as the Irish ran off three goals in a 2:07 span. Stoeckert closed out her three-goal afternoon with a free-position shot with 13:10 left in the game and Murphy added her second goal 13 seconds later to make it 13-7 with 12:57 left in the game.

California replaced Lynch in goal with sophomore Morgan Dyson following Murphy’s goal. She was greeted less than two minutes later by Zentgraf’s goal at 11:03 for a 14-7 Irish lead.

Cavallo scored a pair of goals around Ferguson’s second goal of the game to make it 15-9 with 7:17 left in the game. Following Ferguson’s goal, Lynch returned to the California goal to play the final 9:31 of the game. Carpenter’s third goal with 5:05 left closed Notre Dame’s scoring and made it 16-9.

Ghillie Little and Dale (second goal of the game) closed the scoring for Cal with a pair of goals for a 16-11 final score.

The Irish fired 39 shots at the Cal goal with Lynch making nine saves in 56:34. Dyson gave up two goals in 3:26 and did not make any saves. Erin Goodman (So., Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) gave up 11 goals in picking up her 10th win of the season, making five saves on the afternoon.
