Irish Fall To Virginia, 4-1, At ACC Championship

Ally Bojczuk wins three-set singles match for Notre Dame

CARY, North Carolina — The Notre Dame women’s tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 23 Virginia in the second round of the ACC Championship on Thursday evening in Cary, North Carolina. Ally Bojczuk was the lone winner for the No. 46 Fighting Irish (13-12) in the setback to the Cavaliers (17-7).

“We battled tonight and put everything on the line,” said head coach Alison Silverio. “Ultimately, it wasn’t the outcome we had hoped for, but I’m proud of everyone on this team. This season has lead the foundation for what’s ahead for this program.”

How It Happened

The Cavaliers took the doubles point thanks to victories at courts two and three. The three doubles match finished first as Bess Waldram and Brooke Broda fell to Meghan Kelley and Hunter Bleser, 6-0. UVA then clinched the point as Vivian Glozman and Sofia Muera defeated Bojczuk and Zoe Taylor, 6-1.  Those decisions rendered moot a 3-3 battle between No. 50 Cameron Corse and Zoe Spence against UVA’s No. 52 paring of Amber O’Dell and Chlose Gullickson.

Munera made it 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Taylor at five singles, before Gullickson took a 6-3, 6-4 win from Broda on court four to make it 3-0. The Irish got on the scoreboard at court three, where Bojczuk rebounded from a 6-1 first set loss to win the ensuing sets 6-2 and 6-1, cutting the margin to 3-1.

Virginia clinched the match at six singles with a 7-6, 6-1 victory by Camille Favero over Maeve Koscielski. In the abandoned matches, Corse and Glozman were headed to a third set (3-6, 6-3), while Spence was on the verge of forcing a third set against Kelley (6-4, 4-1).
