Irish End Season With 22-11 Rout Of 15th-Ranked Vanderbilt

Nashville, Tenn. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team closed the 2003 regular season in grand style as the Irish set a school record for goals in a road game in defeating the 15th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores, 22-11, Friday night.

Ten players scored for the 18th-ranked Irish led by Angela Dixon (Sr., Pennsauken, N.J.) who closed her Notre Dame career with a career-best seven-point game getting four goals and three assists. Freshman Crysti Foote (Suffern, N.Y.) added four goals of her own and Danielle Shearer (Sr., Hampstead, Md.) and Anne Riley (Sr., Marblehead, Mass.) added three goals each in the win.

The victory improved the Irish to 8-7 on the season while Vanderbilt falls to 7-8 in the regular-season finale’s for each school.

Notre Dame totaled nine assists in the game, pushing the season total to 101 and besting the team record of 95 (set in 1999).

The Irish trailed 7-4 before getting goals from Abby Owen (Jr., Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.), Shearer, Riley and Foote over the final 4:17 of the half to take an 8-7 lead into the intermission.

Notre Dame put the game out of reach in the second half scoring the first five goals over the first 6:32 of the half to build a 13-7 lead. The Irish would outscore the Commodores 14-4 in the final half on the way to the 22-11 win.

The last time Notre Dame scored 22 goals in a game was on March 10, 2000 when the Irish defeated Ohio University, 22-3. The previous record for goals in a road game was set on April 19, 1998 when the Irish defeated Gannon, 20-10 in the second season of the program.
