Irish Earn #3 Seed In NCAA Championships, Host Utah On Saturday

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team earned the No. 3 national seed and will welcome Utah to South Bend for the first round of the 2023 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship on Saturday, May 13. To purchase tickets to Saturday’s game, click here.

The game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET at Arlotta Stadium and it will air on ESPNU.

Notre Dame (10-2) wrapped up its regular season on May 6 with an emphatic 18-9 win over RV/#17 North Carolina at Dorrance Field. The Irish finished 4-2 in the ACC, recording two wins over UNC, a win over then No. 1 Duke and Syracuse. Utah enters the tourney with a 12-4 record and fresh off its first ASUN Tournament title with an 11-9 win over Air Force.

The first round matchup between the Irish and Utes will mark the first time the two teams will meet in program history. 

The winner of Notre Dame’s first-round contest against Utah will take on the winner of the first-round tilt between No. 6 seed Johns Hopkins and Bryant in the quarterfinals. The Irish are in the Annapolis quarterfinal, which will be played on Sunday, May 21.

NOTRE DAME IN THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

  • Notre Dame owns a 21-25 record in 25 previous trips to the NCAA Championship.
  • The Irish have now made 16 of the last 17 NCAA Championship fields.
  • Notre Dame is 16-11 over its last 11 NCAA Championships, including national semifinal appearances in 2012 and 2015 and title game appearances in 2010 and 2014.
  • The Irish have advanced to at least the NCAA Championship quarterfinals in 10 of its last 11 appearances.
  • This is the 14th time overall–and 13th time in the last 15 seasons–the Irish have earned one of the eight national seeds for the NCAA Championship.
  • The Irish also were seeded for the 2001 (5th), 2008 (6th), 2009 (7th), 2011 (4th), 2012 (4th), 2013 (2nd), 2014 (6th), 2015 (1st), 2016 (3rd), 2017 (4th), 2018 (7th), 2019 (7th) and 2021 (6th) tournaments.
  • Notre Dame advanced to the NCAA championship weekend in 2001, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2015 and played in the title game in 2010 and 2014.

The 17-team NCAA Championship field consists of eight automatic-qualifying teams and eight at-large squads. The top eight teams in the bracket are seeded. The top three teams in the tourney all come from the ACC as No. 1 Duke and No. 2 Virginia join the Irish as the top-seeded teams.
