Palo Alto, Calif. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team suffered a tough, one-goal loss to close out the two-game road trip to California as the Irish fell to Stanford, 13-12, Sunday afternoon at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.

The Cardinal scored the final two goals of the game with 6:53 and 4:36 left on the clock to wipe out an 11-10 Irish lead on the way to the win.

Tenth-ranked Notre Dame had four players score two goals each – Kaitlin Keena, Jenny Granger, Kaitlyn Brosco and Betsy Mastropieri – while Maggie Tamasitis, Ansley Stewart, Shaylyn Blaney and Emily Conner had one goal each. Keena also had two assists with Tamasitis adding three assists for a pair of four-point afternoons.

Emilie Boeri led 13th-ranked Stanford with three goals in the winning effort. She was joined by Karen Nesbitt, Leslie Foard and Lauren Schmidt with two goals each while Anna Kim, Sarah Flynn, Anna Boeri and Carolyn Bradley had one goal each. Anna Boeri also added three assists for the Cardinal.

The loss drops Notre Dame to 1-1 on the season while Stanford is 1-0 with the season-opening win.

The Irish got off to a slow start in this game as Stanford scored the first four goals of the game to build a 4-0 lead with 16:41 left in the first half.

Notre Dame got its offense rolling at with 16:26 left in the first when Granger scored her first of the game off a Tamasitis assist to cut the lead to 4-1.

Mastropieri then cut the lead in half as she scored an unassisted goal at 12:35 to make it a 4-2 game.

The Cardinal upped the lead to three goals with 1:36 left in the half as Bradley beat Irish goaltender Ellie Hilling on a free-position shot to build the lead to 5-2.

Keena and Tamasitis combined 21 seconds later with 1:15 left in the half to make it a 5-3 game on Keena’s first of the day and that’s the way the first half ended with Stanford in the lead by a pair of goals.

The Irish kept chipping at the Cardinal lead as Brosco opened the second half with her first goal of the game just 36 seconds in and the lead was down to one goal.

Nesbitt answered back to make it 6-4 at 28:58 before Keena and Conner scored free-position goals 31 seconds apart at 28:15 and 27:44 to get the Irish back to even for the first time since the opening draw at 6-6.

Kim put Stanford back in front at 25:18, but the Irish surged ahead with goals by Stewart and Tamasitis 11 seconds apart to make it 8-7 for the Irish with 23:00 left on the scoreboard.

The lead held up for over three minutes, before Stanford got the equalizer at 19:26 off the stick of Foard. From there the lead would go back and forth. Brosco’s second goal of the game with 16:35 left put the Irish in front, 9-8.

Emilie Boeri got her hat trick with 16:02 left in the game to even it at 9-9 and Nesbitt’s free-position shot with 14:48 put Stanford back in charge at 10-9.

Granger and Mastropieri each got their second goals of the game at 13:04 and 9:33 to turn the tables on Stanford and return the lead to Notre Dame’s hands at 11-10.

Foard and Blaney then traded free-position goals with Foard tying the game and Blaney giving the Irish their final lead of the game at 12-11 with 7:24 left in the game.

From there, the defenses toughened as only Stanford would score in the final seven minutes of the game with Flynn tying the game at 6:53 and Schmidt getting the eventual game winner with 4:36 left in the game.

Stanford out shot the Irish in the game, 32-30. Hilling made eight saves in the Notre Dame goal while the Cardinal got 10 saves from Annie Read in the win.

The Irish will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 19 when they open their home schedule with a visit from No. 2 ranked Northwestern. Game time on Saturday is 5:00 p.m. indoors at the Loftus Sports Center on the Notre Dame campus.
