Irish Drop 14-6 Decision To No. 3 Georgetown

April 16, 2005

Final Stats

Notre Dame, Ind. – The No. 3 ranked Georgetown Hoyas got stellar goalkeeping from senior Sarah Robinson and sophomore Maggie Koch as the duo combined for 17 saves on the afternoon and Catherine Elbe, Allison Chambers and Coco Stanwick gave the Hoyas all the offense they would need in a 14-6 win over Notre Dame at Moose Krause Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Elbe (four goals, one assist), Chambers and Stanwick (three goals and two assists) combined for 10 goals and five assists on the afternoon as they helped Georgetown jump out to an 8-1 halftime lead on the way to the 14-6 victory. Crysti Foote (Jr., Suffern, N.Y.) paced the Irish with three goals on the afternoon while Lena Zentgraf (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.), Kaki Orr (So., Darien, Conn.) and Mary McGrath (Jr., Bryn Mawr, Pa.) added single goals for Notre Dame.

The win improves Georgetown to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in the BIG EAST while the Irish fall to 3-9 and 1-3 in league play. The Hoyas have never lost a BIG EAST contest in five seasons and are now 28-0 all-time versus league foes.

Notre Dame actually controlled the early going, actually out shooting the Hoyas 6-0 over the first eight minutes of the game as Robinson kept the game scoreless until the 9:10 mark of the first half when Zentgraf connected in front to give the Irish a 1-0 lead. Robinson would play just the first half and made eight saves in the first 30:00 minutes.

From there though, it was all Georgetown as the Hoyas ran off eight straight goals before halftime. Elbe got the first of her four goals at the 10:21 mark off a Chambers assist and when Hollis Pica beat Irish goalkeeper Carol Dixon (Sr., Pennsauken, N.J.) five minutes later at the 16:00 minute mark with her first of two goals on the day, Georgetown was ahead to stay at 2-1.

Elbe would add three more goals in the half while Stanwick, Chambers (free-position goal) and Brittany Baschuk (eventual game winner with 2:45 left in the half) rounded out the first-half scoring for the Hoyas.

Maggie Koch started the second half in goal and surrendered a pair of goals to Foote in a 1:19 span before taking over on her way to nine saves in the final 30 minutes. Foote’s goal juts 4:25 into the second stanza made it a 9-3 game, before the Hoyas put it away with three straight goals to build a 12-3 lead with 18 minutes left to play. Lauren Redler, Chambers and Stanwick built the lead to nine goals at the 18:06 mark. Stanwick’s second goal of the day chased Dixon in favor of sophomore Katie Linhares (So., Greenwich, Conn.) who made just her second appearance of the season.

Notre Dame would mount a bit of a comeback when Orr scored on a free-position goal 13:13 into the half and McGrath converted a feed from Brittany Fox (Jr., Annapolis, Md.) at 14:50. Dixon returned to the game at that time and Foote closed out her three-goal day with 14:59 left in the game to cut the lead to 12-6.

Koch was able to hold the Irish off the scoreboard the rest of the way while Chambers and Stanwick each recorded their third goals of the day for the final score of 14-6.

Notre Dame out shot Georgetown, 32-27, on the day. Dixon made four saves for the Irish while Linhares had one save during her brief stint in goal.

The Irish finished their five-game homestand with a 1-4 mark. They are next in action on Sunday, April 24 when they travel to Johns Hopkins for a 1:00 p.m. (EST) game in Baltimore, Md.
