URBANA, Ill. — A pair of strong doubles wins highlighted the day for the University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Atkins Tennis Center at the University of Illinois.
The No. 4 seed pair of Quinn Gleason and Monica Robinson, who enjoyed a first-round bye in the main doubles draw, handled Northern Illinois’ Nelle Youel and Arantza DeLaTorre, 8-4, in the second round. Julie Vrabel and Allison Miller, the ninth-seeded duo, dropped Grace Tapak and Madie Baillon (Illinois) in similar fashion, by a score of 8-3. Both pairs advanced into the third round.
Miller added to the Irish win tally in the qualifying singles draw. The freshman rebounded from a first-set setback to defeat Bradley’s Alexa Brandt 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, as well as advance into Saturday’s main singles draw.
The Irish will face a full day Saturday, with the third round of the doubles draw kicking off at 9 a.m. (CT). The main singles draw will follow with Vrabel, Miller and Mary Closs prepping for first-round matches in the main singles draw, while Gleason and Robinson received byes into the event’s second round.
