Irish Close Home Schedule At The Annual Shamrock Invitational

Jan. 24, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team will wrap up its 2012-13 home season this weekend, hosting the annual Shamrock Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Rolfs Aquatic Center.

The Fighting Irish, a perfect 6-0 during dual competition this season, welcome Towson and Harvard to the Shamrock Invitational for the first time. Notre Dame will also recognize its senior class prior to the start of the competition Friday, which is tentatively set to begin at 5 p.m.

Friday’s meet session will be streamed live on UND.com.

“Harvard has competed at Notre Dame once before, and we are very happy to welcome them back,” Fighting Irish head coach Tim Welsh says. “They are very challenging, as you can expect. Towson University, it’s their first time here, so it’s a whole group of fresh people to compete against, with a different order of events than in past years.

“The meet will have a newness, a freshness to it, and will be highly competitive.”

Last season’s Shamrock Invitational saw Zachary Stephens, then a freshman, break the Rolfs Aquatic Center record in the 200 breast, winning the race in 2:00.59. Frank Dyer (100 and 200 free) was a double-winner for Notre Dame, while Christopher Johnson (100 breast) and Wesley Mullins (200 fly) each added race victories.

The second and final day of the Shamrock Invitational is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday inside the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
