Irish Claim 13th-Place Finish At NCAA Championship

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Notre Dame women’s rowing team captured a 13th-place finish Sunday on a competitive final day of racing at the 2013 NCAA Championship at Eagle Creek Park.

The Irish earned 66 team points during the three-day regatta, and placed each of their three championship launches within the top-13 boats of each event. The 22-team NCAA Championship field was the largest in the history of the competition.

Notre Dame’s first varsity eight opened the day by taking the team victory in the I eights c final, securing 13th-place in the boat field. Coxswain Abby Meyers, Joanna Poinsatte, Stephanie O’Neill, Joanna Mulvey, Courtney Gaberino, Erin Boxberger, Ailish Sheehan, Anna Kottkamp and Molly Bruggeman logged a time of 6:36.141, the crew’s fastest time during the regatta, to earn a near two-second win over Washington State (6:38.076). Cornell finished in third place at 6:40.046, with Wisconsin narrowly behind after a run of 6:41.259. Oklahoma (6:50.205) and Boston University (6:50.575) rounded out the event finishers.

In the varsity four petite final, the Irish launch crossed the finish line in third place to end the season as the number nine team in the country. Coxswain Danni Schneider, Kelsey Murphy, Ellen Gleadow, Stella Willoughby and Kiersten DeHaven clocked in at 7:21.193 to edge out fourth-place Stanford (7:23.404). Yale (7:26.778) and Michigan (7:27.998) claimed fifth and sixth place in the heat, respectively.

In the second varsity eight petite final, Notre Dame closed within one boat length of heat champion and seventh-place finisher Virginia (6:32.130). Coxswain Christina Dines, Paige Aiello, Teresa Blumenstein, Ingrid Woelfel, Carlee Beckler, Rose Doerfler, Kelsey Haddad, Kelsey Sekanick and Teresa Rubinger posted a time of 6:38.007 to close the championship in 12th place overall.
