NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Just a couple of weeks after the end of the 2014 season, several members of the 2015 University of Notre Dame baseball team are scattered around the country for another summer of baseball.
As of June 4, 23 players have been added to 13 summer league teams around the country from the New England area all the way to The Last Frontier of Alaska.
Starting in the Northeast, sophomore Cavan Biggio and senior Robert Youngdahl are playing for the Harwich Mariners of the famous Cape Cod League. Action gets underway next Wednesday, June 11.
In the New England Collegiate Baseball League, senior Conor Biggio, junior Michael Hearne and sophomore Scott Tully are with the New Bedford Bay Sox while junior Kyle Richardson and senior Cristian Torres will play for the North Adams SteepleCats. First pitch for the league is Thursday, June 5.
Also in the Northeast is junior Connor Hale, who is playing for the North Fork Ospreys of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League. The Ospreys opened their summer campaign Sunday, June 1.
Moving over to Pennsylvania, sophomore Chris Melillo is playing his summer ball with the Quakertown Blazers of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League. The Blazers also opened their season Sunday, June 1.
Several Irish players are in the Midwest in three different leagues. Six are in the Northwoods League as junior Nick McCarty resides with the St. Cloud Rox, senior Blaise Lezynski is with the Rochester Honkers, junior Ricky Sanchez is suiting up for the Alexandria Blue Anchors and senior Ryan Bull and sophomores Ryan Lidge and Ryan Smoyer are playing for the Kalamazoo Growlers.
The Growlers, who play at Homer Stryker Field where the Irish played Central Michigan this season, will wear a unique “selfie jersey” on Thursday, July 24 against the Wisconsin Woodchucks.
The league opened play Tuesday, May 27.
Elsewhere in the Midwest, senior Kevin DeFilippis is playing for the NW Indiana Oilmen of the Midwest Collegiate League and sophomores Kyle Fiala and Jim Orwick and senior Kyle Rubbinaccio are with the Lake Erie Monarchs of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League.
Heading out to the West Coast, juniors Joey Cresta and Jack Flaherty and senior Phil Mosey are with the Redding Colt 45’s of the Far West League. That league got underway Friday, May 30.
Lastly, junior James Nevant made the biggest journey of anyone on the Irish to play summer ball as he headed North to Alaska to play for the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks of the Alaska Baseball League. Action begins Sunday, June 8.
To follow the Irish throughout the summer stay tuned to @NDBaseball and @NDsidRuss on Twitter. Hopefully pictures from Kalamazoo’s “selfie night” will be readily available through these two Twitter channels following the July 24 game.
