Irish Baseball Open 2012 BIG EAST Tournament As No. 7 Seed

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame (29-24, 14-13 BIG EAST) has earned the No. 7 seed in the 2012 BIG EAST Baseball Championship at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla. The Irish will play the No. 2 seed St. John’s at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The Red Storm (33-21, 18-9 BIG EAST), the preseason favorite of the conference’s head coaches, earned a share of its seventh BIG EAST regular-season title. Notre Dame and St. John’s are the two winningest teams in BIG EAST Championship competition. The Red Storm have a record 40 all-time wins in the tournament, while the Irish have 32.

Notre Dame will then play either the winner or loser, depending on its result against St. John’s, of the No. 3 seed Seton Hall and No. 6 seed Rutgers tilt at either 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Thursday.

The Irish qualified for the BIG EAST tournament 16 times over its 17 years in the league. Notre Dame captured five consecutive tournament titles from 2002-06. The Irish also finished as the tournament runner-up in 1996 and ’98.

Notre Dame owns an all-time mark of 32-23 in tournament action.

The Irish have had five players named BIG EAST tournament Most Valuable Player. The first Notre Dame player to earn the award was Steve Stanley (’02). Javi Sanchez followed in ’03, Matt Macri in ’04, Matt Edwards in ’05 and Wade Korpi in ’06.
