TOWSON, Md. – Incoming University of Notre Dame women’s lacrosse freshmen Alex Dalton and Cortney Fortunato played big roles on the defensive and offensive ends of the field, respectively, last Saturday (July 6) as the duo helped the North squad take down the South team, 18-16, at the 2013 Under Armour All-America Classic at Unitas Field.

Fortunato earned game MVP honors after tying a classic record with eight points. The Northport, N.Y., native had a game-high four assists and tied for a game-high with four goals. She also claimed two draw controls.

Dalton, meanwhile, contributed nicely on the defensive end, totaling four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Both figures tied for second among all players.

Fortunato had already scored two goals and dished out two assists before halftime, but the South led the North, 8-7, heading into the locker room. The nation’s No. 1 recruit played a big role in helping her team earn the win, however, as she assisted on consecutive goals that gave the North its first lead since right before halftime. Later in the contest with the North firmly in control, Fortunato scored two goals within 40 seconds apart to cement the victory.

Incoming recruit Casey Pearsall, who was unable to play due to an injury suffered during the basketball season, joined the duo on the North squad.

Since the game began in 2006, Notre Dame has had 17 participants in the game, which is the seventh most in the country.
