Guiliano breaks school 50M free record, earns Olympic Trials cut

GREENSBORO, N.C. — For the first time in program history, a male Notre Dame swimmer has qualified for Olympic Trials.

On Friday, Irish sophomore Chris Guiliano punched his ticket to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis in 2024. The sophomore out of Douglassville, Pa., finished with a time of 22.46, which won the B Final at the 2022 Toyota U.S. Open. The Olympic Trials cut is 22.79.

“The best part of Chris is his desire and hunger to pursue excellence at the highest level of swimming,” Peterson Family Head Coach Chris Lindauer said on Friday. “He gets the big picture and is willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals.”

Guiliano also broke the Notre Dame program record in the process of making it to Indy. The previous Irish record (22.90) was set in 2015 by Justin Plaschka.

Guiliano currently holds the Notre Dame individual records in both the 50 yard freestyle (19.17) and 100 yard freestyle (42.34). He was a part of two relay teams that broke school records last season: 200 medley (1:23.76) and 400 medley (3:05.92). Guiliano’s 200 yard freestyle time of 1:34.03 ranks fifth all-time in program history. He was a 2022 NCAA qualifier, and he is well on his way to making it again.

In addition to the 50 meter freestyle, Guilliano swam the 200 meter free on Friday morning and finished with a time of 1:51.36. He will compete in the B Final on Friday evening and swim the 100 meter free on Saturday.

The U.S. Open meet continues through Saturday, and eight additional Irish swimmers made the trek. Full results can be found here.
