ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Top-seeded University of Notre Dame women’s tennis senior Quinn Gleason remains in the hunt for the ITA Midwest Regional singles championship, advancing to the Round of 16 after play on Saturday.
With a first-round bye, Gleason faced DePaul’s Rebeca Mitrea in the Round of 32, coming away with a 6-0, 6-4 victory. The 93rd-ranked Gleason will play Ohio State’s Sandy Niehaus, who is a 13-16 seed, when play resumes Sunday.
Junior Mary Closs and freshman Rachel Chong also picked up Round of 64 wins Saturday, as Closs upended Eastern Illinois’ Grace Summers, 6-0, 6-1, and Chong beat Illinois’ Jaclyn Switkes, 6-2, 6-4. Both Closs and Chong fell in their Round of 32 matches.
Earlier in the day, a pair of Irish doubles duos played in the Round of 16, but both fell. Brooke Broda and Chong lost to Illinois’ third-seeded Louise Kwong and Ines Vias, 8-1, and Closs and Allison Miller fell to Ohio State’s 5-8 seed Ferny Angeles Paz and Niehaus, 8-4.
