NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Greg Mattison, Bill Sheridan and Steve Addazio – all members of the University of Notre Dame football coaching staff in 2001 – will remain on new head coach George O’Leary’s staff of assistant coaches.

Their specific position assignments will be determined at a later date.

Mattison has been the Irish defensive coordinator the past five seasons, coaching the inside linebackers in his first year in ’97, then the defensive line the past four years. Notre Dame’s defense ranked 13th nationally in ’01, permitting 304.91 yards per game (Notre Dame’s best figure in that category since ’96).

Mattison previously spent five years as an assistant at Michigan (the last two as defensive coordinator), three at Texas A&M, two at Navy, six at Western Michigan and one at Cornell. He spent five years as a Wisconsin high school head coach, then served as a graduate assistant at Illinois – after graduating from Wisconsin-LaCrosse in 1971.

The ’01 season marked the first at Notre Dame for Sheridan, who coached the Irish safeties this past season and also worked with the special teams. The Irish secondary unit ranked 10th nationally in pass defense in ’01 at 172.64 yards per game (also the best Irish figure in that category since ’96).

Sheridan, an ’82 graduate of Grand Valley State, previously spent three years as an assistant at Michigan State, six years at Army, three at Cincinnati, and two at Maine. He served as a graduate assistant at Eastern Michigan and Michigan and also was a Michigan high school assistant for a year.

Addazio has been a member of the Irish staff for three previous seasons, coaching the offensive line, specifically the tackles and tight ends, and also working with the kicking units.

An ’81 Central Connecticut State graduate, he also served as a Syracuse assistant for four seasons, was head coach at Cheshire (Conn.) High School for seven seasons and was an assistant at Western Connecticut State for four years.
