74th Annual Bengal Mission Bouts Set To Begin In Late February
Tickets for all five rounds of the Bengal Bouts go on sale Feb. 16.

Four returning champions headline the list of 130 boxers slated to compete beginning later this month in the 74th annual version of the Bengal Mission Bouts, the University of Notre Dame’s yearly club boxing tournament.

Tickets go on sale Feb. 16 for the final three rounds of the Bengal Bouts. Preliminary bouts are set for 6:30 p.m. EST on both Wednesday, Feb. 25 and Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004 – with quarterfinal bouts slated for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 1, semifinals at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, and the finals at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17.

All bouts are scheduled for the Joyce Center Fieldhouse (enter Gate 3 of the north dome).

The four returning champions include senior Tony Hollowell (Indianapolis) in the 140-pound weight class, junior 155-pounder Colin Kerrigan (Summerville, S.C.), sophomore 165-pounder Alex Fergus (Honolulu, Hawaii) and senior heavyweight Stefan Borovina (Locust Valley, N.Y. ).

The returning boxers also include five who lost in the 2003 finals: junior Jon Valenzuela (Van Horn, Texas) in the 125-pound weight class, fifth-year senior Ryan Duffey (Midland, Texas) in the 145-pound bouts, senior 150-pounder Brandon Gasser (Dublin, Ohio), senior 190-pounder Bill Zizic (Chicago) and junior heavyweight Daryl Burton (Aurora, Ill.).

Local boxers expected to compete include seniors Pedro Alves (Mishawaka), Luke Dillon (Granger), Pat Dillon (South Bend) and Peter Miller (South Bend), plus sophomores Daniel Moriarty (South Bend) and Greg Schaefer (Granger).

Ringside reserved seats are $8 for the quarterfinals and semifinals, and $15 (center), $12 (side) and $10 (corner) for the finals. There’s a $2 discount on ringside seats for groups of 10 or more. Advance general admission seats are $5 for quarterfinals and semifinals, $7 for the finals. A five-session pass, with a general admission ticket to each night, is $10. General admission at the gate for students 16 and under is $3 for the quarterfinals and semifinals and $5 for the finals. There is no charge for the Feb. 25 and 26 preliminary bouts.

The Bengal Bouts, conducted since 1930 and now under the auspices of the Rec-Sports Department, benefit the Holy Cross Missions in Bangladesh. Last year’s Bouts raised a record $66,000.
