Game 4 Preview: #11/10 Ohio State

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – No. 10/9 Notre Dame hits the road for the first time this season to take on No. 11/10 Ohio State at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 12 in Ohio Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on BTN.

THE OHIO STATE SERIES

• Saturday will be the 46th meeting all time between Notre Dame and Ohio State. The Irish lead the all-time series with the Buckeyes, holding a 34-11 advantage in the matchup.

• The most recent installment between the two sides came last season at Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes pulled out a tight 13-11 win.

• The Irish have won 16 of the last 18 matchups with Ohio State, including the 9-0 shutout at Arlotta Stadium on March 21, 2015, which is the last time the Irish held an opponent scoreless in a game.

• Notre Dame holds a 14-7 edge over the Buckeyes in the series when playing at Ohio State.

THE KAVANAGH BROTHERS

Pat Kavanagh became the fourth Tewaaraton Finalist in program history in 2021 and his brother Chris joined the 2022 squad as an attackman.

• Pat currently leads the team in points (14) with 7G and 7A while Chris is second in points (9) with 7G and 2A.

• The brothers have linked up on six goals this season, with one assisting the other’s goal.

• In the 2022 season opener, Pat and Chris combined for 14 points off eight goals and six assists, despite each playing less than a half.

• Pat was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week following the four-goal, four-assist outing.

• Pat produced a team-high 64 points on the season off 38 assists and 26 goals.

• In just 12 games Pat became the all-time single-season ND assist record holder, passing older brother Matt (33) for the record. Matt’s 33-assist season came in an 18-game 2014 season.

• Of the five Tewaaraton Finalists, Pat led the group in assists per game (3.17), ground balls (35) and caused turnovers (9).

• Pat’s 38 assists over 12 games ranked third in the NCAA and led the ACC in assists per game with an average of 3.17.

• In the final game of the 2021 regular season Pat broke the program record for points in a game with a 10-point showing off five goals and five assists in the blowout win over No. 9 Syracuse.

DOMINATING DEFENSE

• The Irish lead the ACC in scoring defense, allowing just 9.67 goals per game. This is even more impressive since two of Notre Dame’s three games have come against teams ranked in the top three in the country at the time of the contest.

• Notre Dame leads the ACC and ranks fourth in the country in caused turnovers per game, averaging 11.67.

• The Irish defense made a statement in its season opener against Detroit Mercy, allowing just two goals over the 60 minutes of action.

• The two goals are the fewest allowed by Notre Dame since the 2015 season.

• The Notre Dame goalies combined to make 19 saves while allowing just two goals for 90.5 save percentage.

• Despite the loss, the Irish defense held No. 1 Maryland to its lowest goal total of the season, limiting the Terrapins to 11 goals.

• The 2021 defense was one of the best units in the country, allowing just 8.92 goals per game.

• The 8.92 goals per game ranked third in the country and first in the ACC.

SPECIAL TEAMS STRENGTH

• Notre Dame ranks in the top 10 in both man-up offense and man-down defense through the first month of the season.

• The Irish EMO unit has cashed in on 6-of-9 chances (.667) this season.

• Five players have combined to score the six goals, with Pat Kavanagh being the only player with multiple goals.

• Notre Dame’s man-down defense has held opponents to scoring on just 2-of-9 opportunities (.222).

CHALLENGING SLATE

• Notre Dame has never shied away from putting together a challenging schedule and the 2022 slate is no different.

• Of Notre Dame’s 12 regular-season opponents, 10 are currently ranked in the top 20 in either the USILA or Inside Lacrosse polls.

• The Irish have seven matchups on the schedule against teams currently ranked in the top ten in the polls.

ALL CLEAR

• The Irish have been exceptional at clearing the ball this season, leading the country with a 95.8 percentage.

• Notre Dame went 25-for-25 on clears against Maryland, 19-for-21 against Georgetown and 24-for-25 in the win over Cleveland State.

• On defense the Irish have held opponents to clearing at just a 77.3 percent clip, ranking ninth in the country.

THE ATTACK IS BACK

• The Irish returned 74.0 percent of their goals from last season (125 of 169).

• Seven of ND’s top eight scorers from 2021 are on the 2022 roster, including six that finished in double figures.

• Five of six attacking starters from the 2020 squad are back in 2021, as Pat Kavanagh, Griffin Westlin, Wheaton Jackoboice, Quinn McCahon and Eric Dobson return to the field.

CORRIGAN ALL-TIME DI PROGRAM WINS LEADER

• With the win over No. 1 Duke on April 10, 2021, Baumer Family Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Kevin Corrigan broke the NCAA record for most wins at a DI program with 311, passing Bob Shillinglaw (Delaware).

• Corrigan became just the third coach in NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse history to reach the 300-win mark at a single school with the win over Marquette on April 10, 2019.

• Corrigan is one of just four active Division I coaches to reach the 300-win mark in his career.

• Corrigan has an overall record of 323-169 in his 35 seasons of coaching.

• The head coach is 314-155 in his 34 seasons at Notre Dame.

• Corrigan is the longest tenured men’s lacrosse coach at the DI level.
