ATHENS, Ga. – University of Notre Dame women’s tennis duo Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) and Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich.) advanced out of the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship Thursday, defeating Stanford’s pairing of Stacy Tan and Ellen Tsay at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

After dropping the first set to their Cardinal counterparts (4-6), the eighth-ranked Irish duo bounced back to win a pair of close sets (7-5, 7-6 (7-5)) to close out the 24th-ranked team of Tan and Tsay. It marks the second consecutive year that Frilling and Mathews have advanced into the Round of 16 after doing so with a victory over Vanderbilt’s team of Rachael Dillon and Alex Leatu in 2011.

Frilling and Mathews now face UCLA’s ninth-ranked pairing of Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez on Friday for a berth into the quarterfinals. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (ET).
