Four Women's Volleyball Players Garner Big East Awards

November 21, 1998

PITTSBURGH – Four Notre Dame women’s volleyball players were honored this evening at the BIG EAST Championships banquet. Senior Lindsay Treadwell (Austin, Texas) was selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while sophomore outside hitter Christi Girton (Muncie, Ind.) made the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Two Notre Dame freshman, Marcie Bomhack (Waukesha, Wis.) and Kristy Kreher (Birmingham, Mich.) also were selected to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team.

Treadwell, the team captain and only fourth-year player, leads the Irish in digs, blocks, hitting percentage and service aces. Earlier in the year, she was selected to two all-tournament squads and earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors. This is Treadwell’s first such regular season honor from the BIG EAST, however, she was the 1996 BIG EAST Championships MVP.

Girton, who was also named a BIG EAST Player of the Week earlier this season, received her second BIG EAST award in as many years by being named to the All-BIG EAST second team. The sophomore outside hitter has notched eight double-doubles (kills/digs) this season, including five against BIG EAST opponents. A year ago, Girton, along with teammate Denise Boylan (Lisle, Ill.), made the All-BIG EAST Rookie Team.

Bomhack, a 1998 Volleyball Magazine Fab-50 selection, averaged a team-leading 2.92 kills per game in BIG EAST matches and had a sensational night against BIG EAST foe Providence in late October with a 22-kill and 11-dig performance. The freshman outside hitter also had double-digit kill totals in six BIG EAST matches.

Kreher has seen time at both opposite and setter in her first season at Notre Dame. She leads the team in BIG EAST matches with a .289 hitting percentage and had a 14-kill, 15-dig effort earlier this season against Providence.

Georgetown, the BIG EAST regular season co-champion, swept the player, rookie and coach of the year awards. Middle blocker Melissa Tytko was named player of the year after leading the league in hitting percentage, while freshman Yulia Vtyurina, a six-time Rookie of the Week honoree, was named rookie of the year. Georgetown’s head coach Jolene Nagel got the coach of the year award after helping the Hoyas to their first BIG EAST regular season co-championship.

The Notre Dame women’s volleyball team will be in action here at the BIG EAST Championships versus host Pittsburgh at 1:30 p.m on Saturday, November 21. The winner of that match will face second-seeded Connecticut Saturday night, and the championship match will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 22.
