Five Irish Named Fencers of the Year

SOUTH BEND, IN. – As announced by the ACC on Thursday afternoon, five Irish collected Fencer of the Year honors in their respective weapons. Head Coach Gia Kvaratshelia was also named both the men’s and women’s Coach of the Year.

Head Coach Gia Kvaratshelia has led the Irish to his fourth national title with Notre Dame, having previously led the Irish to the team crown in 2017, 2018, and 2021. 

Hunter Candreva who made his first appearance at NCAA Championships, was named the men’s epee fencer of the year. He went 32-19 (.627) in dual-meet competition, was an ACC Individual Runner-Up and placed 8th at NCAA’s. 

Andrew Machovec, who was named the men’s foil fencer of the year, went 71-9 (.888) in dual meet competition. He was also an ACC Individual Champion and went 8-1 in ACC Championship dual meets. Machovec placed 5th at NCAA’s and is ranked fourth in the men’s foil national rankings.

Kaylin Hsieh was named the women’s epee fencer of the year. She went 38-9 in dual meet competition in the 2022 season. She also took home the national championship title in epee at the 2022 National Championships. She is ranked fourth in the women’s national epee national rankings.

Amita Berthier claimed the women’s foil fencer of the year title. She was an NCAA individual runner up while going 31-8 in dual meet competition during the 2022 season. She is ranked seventh in the women’s foil national rankings.

Atara Greenbaum was named the women’s sabre fencer of the year. She went 21-14 in dual meet competition throughout the 2022 season. She was an ACC Individual runner up and finished with a record of 6-3 during the championship meet. She was also a NCAA individual runner up.
